Ngôi nhà (giữa hình) nằm trên mảnh đất 5 x 21 m ở một khu đô thị mới của Huế dành cho đôi vợ chồng cùng hai con. Mong muốn của gia chủ là có không gian sống ngập nắng, gió, thiên nhiên.
Huế nổi tiếng với kiến trúc nhà vườn. Tuy nhiên, do quá trình đô thị hóa, đất đai bị thu hẹp, nhà liền kề trở thành lựa chọn hàng đầu của người dân dù thường bị thiếu sáng, thông gió kém, ít gần gũi với thiên nhiên. Để giải quyết các vấn đề này, nhóm kiến trúc sư của Nguyễn Khải Architects & Associates đưa ra thiết kế nhà lệch tầng.
Nhờ giải pháp lệch tầng, căn nhà ba tầng như biến thành năm.
Không gian dành cho cầu thang giảm bớt nhưng vẫn thoải mái đi lại. Giao thông giữa các tầng được thu ngắn.
Nhà có nhiều khoảng trống, tối đa hóa quá trình thông gió và luôn đầy ánh sáng.
Để gió và nắng dễ đi vào sâu, các kiến trúc sư còn sử dụng những cánh cửa lớn, có thể đóng – mở hết tầm.
Toàn bộ nhà tắm và nhà kho được đặt ở phía Tây ngôi nhà nhằm giảm bức xạ nhiệt.
Nội thất trong nhà đơn giản, màu sắc trung tính, đem tới cảm giác rộng rãi, mát mẻ.
Cây xanh đóng góp một phần quan trọng cho công trình, xuất hiện ở mọi góc nhìn.
Ở mặt Tây nhà, cây xanh được đặt vào những ô trống ngẫu nhiên, vừa tạo diện mạo độc đáo, vừa giảm ánh nắng gắt và hỗ trợ thông gió, cải thiện chất lượng không khí.
Do diện tích đất có hạn, khu vườn vốn ở dưới đất được đưa lên cao. Khoảng trống phía trên khu vườn này cho phép cây xanh tận dụng nước mưa, ánh sáng tự nhiên để sinh trưởng.
Đây cũng là nơi thư giãn yêu thích của gia chủ. Sự hiện diện của cây xanh cả trong lẫn ngoài ngôi nhà kết nối con người với thiên nhiên, tạo ra bầu không khí yên bình.
Nhờ khai thác tốt không gian và tự nhiên, chủ nhà ít khi phải sử dụng đèn điện, điều hòa.
